Christina Markell is an artist, maker and writer residing in Sonoma County, California. She embarked on her artistic journey by crafting intricate dioramas, assemblages, and collages using found and up-cycled materials. Her artistic evolution took a significant turn when she inherited an easel and paints from her artist mother-in-law, Karin Battat. Inspired by this gift, Christina delved into the world of painting, with a focus on semi-abstract and mixed media landscapes inspired by the gorgeous surroundings of the Sonoma coast and countryside. Her pieces evoke a dream-like quality, capturing her meditative moments in nature.
Christina's artistic repertoire expands to her quasi steam-punk assemblage pieces, weaving influences of surrealist-movement artists, her love for Mexican folk art and her passion for recycling and conservation. In her creations, she aspires to coalesce these elements to evoke a sense of the surreal, but also pay homage to the diverse, artistic traditions of the West Coast.
In essence, Christina Markell's art incorporates both organic and industrial elements. Her works invite viewers to contemplate a space where the beauty of silence can harmonize with our often tumultuous modern world.
